I have been taking Structure Drawing with Colleen Barry every Tuesday since November 2013 at the Grand Central Academy in New York City. Since almost all of my past teachers have gently recommended I take a drawing class, I sought out someone who was really good. As soon as I saw Colleen’s work I knew I had to take her class, even though it is 90 miles away. Colleen will not be teaching her regular Structure Drawing class this summer at GCA. 🙁
The good news – She will be teaching workshops! Anyone who is interested in and available should take one of Colleen’s workshops. I highly recommend her!

Colleen is offering her workshop “The Structure of the Human Body: A Drawing Workshop” throughout the summer at several locations . See her website //www.colleenbarryart.com/colleenbarryart.com/Workshops.html Here’s what you can expect from the workshop:With an emphasis on accurate observation, students will improve their understanding of the figure by incorporating the use of the skeleton, plaster casts (ecorche), and master drawings into their life studies. Over the course of one week students will learn to complete a carefully rendered drawing from the live model, followed by a companion anatomical/structural drawing in the same pose. Colleen will dissect the pose from each position, illustrating anatomical landmarks, proportional systems, and structural conventions with the aid of masterworks from the Renaissance through Beaux-Arts. By developing their drawings alongside 2-D ecorches, students will develop a conceptual understanding of the body that may be applied to observational drawing as well as studies from memory and imagination.Here is the workshop schedule:
